Anchor Games©

The Beta Eta chapter is exceptionally involved in Delta Gamma’s national philanthropy, Service for Sight. Each year, the Beta Eta chapter of Delta Gamma hosts major two charity events, Anchor Splash© and Anchor Slam. Both events are fundraisers for the Delta Gamma Foundation and Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Funds from Anchor Splash© and Anchor Slam support Delta Gamma’s philanthropies; Service for Sight Scholarships, Fellowships and Loans Values and Ethics Lectureships as well as a number of educational programs for our members, all as part of the Delta Gamma Foundation. The Beta Eta chapter of Delta Gamma also has adopted the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired as our local philanthropy, and the money that Beta Eta raised often funds the purchases of equipment and technology that assists in teaching the students.

At last semester’s Anchor Splash©, fraternities and non-Greek male organizations associated with the University of Texas formed teams to compete for the title of Anchor Splash© Champion. The focus of Anchor Splash© is the synchronized swimming contest, in which teams are judges by their choreography, costumes and overall spirit. Anchor Splash© events also include a Most Beautiful Eyes contest, a banner contest and relay races. The most beautiful eyes contest raises awareness of the condition of blindness that students at the School for the Blind and visually impaired experience.

To celebrate Anchor Splash©, Beta Eta also hosts Anchor Bash©, a concert open to the entire Austin community to showcase the philanthropy. This past fall, Emory Quinn played at the DG house to a large crowd of UT students, family and friends. Overall, the two events raised over $18,000 for our philanthropies.

Anchor Slam, co-hosted with the Texas Wranglers, was a great success for Service for Sight. Anchor Slam is a 3-on-3 basketball tournament held on campus at Clark Basketball Courts. 48 teams, totaling 200 students, participated in Anchor Slam this spring. The event brought awareness of Service for Sight to UT, and raised over $2,000 through sponsorships and entry fees alone. Local companies donated food and drinks for the event, and the grand prizes, basketballs signed by the entire UT Basketball team, were generously donated to the event.

The goal for these events is to raise awareness of blindness within the Austin community and throughout campus. By getting alumnae involved in the event, we were able to outreach to our community, and the various student organizations exposed became aware of our commitment to the Delta Gamma national philanthropy. We worked towards raising as much money as possible to donate to the Delta Gamma Foundation and to our local philanthropy, so as to make the biggest impact in our community as possible.
